Making On and Off The Map: Book forms, Card Portfolios and
Mail Art
This is a weekend for playing with paper and a sense of
place, taking inspiration from observing and inventing our
surround. Possibilities include the view, both built and
natural; the wind, weather, water, sky and wild life, as
well as local and invented history. Visual enchantment is
in these border zones. We’ll examine simple book forms,
card portfolios and mail art. We will experiment with color,
collage, surface embellishment, stencils, stamps, prints,
pleats, folds and tears.

GULFPORT FLORIDA
Our winter studios are in Gulfport Florida, a charming village,
surrounded by St. Petersburg on the edge of Tampa Bay. Our town
is pedestrian friendly and home to many working artists. Our
lively main street, Beach Boulevard, is lined with modest 1920’s
cottages. It begins in a long parkway and ends in a small commercial
area with good restaurants, interesting shops and antique stores
and a vintage dance casino right on the shore of Boca Ciega
Bay.
The brand new Gulfport Art Center, a former shuffleboard clubhouse,
is a recent gift from the city to its artists. The Center resides
in a park which includes tennis courts, playground, dog park,
and two other venerable Gulfport institutions: The Gulfport
Historical Society and Scout Hall. It is an easy walk to the
beach, marina, fishing pier, many restaurants and shops, and
our studios.
St. Petersburg and it's beautiful waterfront downtown area has
a very vital and lively art scene with many museums, art centers
and galleries just a short drive from Gulfport.
Think
of the long trip home.
Should we have stayed at home and thought of here?
...What childishness is it that while there's a breath
of life
in our bodies, we are determined to rush
to see the sun the other way around?
...Oh, must we dream our dreams
and have them too?
And have we room
for one more folded sunset, still quite warm?
